Is eyebrow embroidery the same as microblading?
In medical terms, eyebrow embroidery and microblading are the same procedure. “Eyebrow embroidery” is the name Singapore salons use for every kind of semi-permanent brow tattoo, and microblading is the original hair-stroke technique within it. A dermatology review treats microblading and eyebrow embroidery as one procedure that originated in Asia. Some salons describe embroidery as staying in the upper layers of the skin, unlike a tattoo. Every technique, however, places pigment in the upper dermis, beneath the surface layer that the skin sheds continuously, and pigment held at that depth is a tattoo.
- Microblading A row of fine needles arranged like a scalpel blade cuts short strokes that mimic hairs, and pigment is pressed into the cuts.
- Powder, misty or ombre brows A machine deposits tiny dots of pigment that build into a soft, filled-in finish resembling brow powder.
- Combination or hybrid brows Hair strokes at the front of the brow merge into machine shading towards the tail.
- Nano or machine hair strokes A single fine needle on a machine draws the hair strokes in place of a blade, so the skin is punctured rather than cut.
Microblading vs powder brows, which lasts longer?
Hair strokes from microblading usually fade over 12 to 18 months, so a refresh is booked at that interval. Salons often state that powder brows last longer, up to two years, and that oily skin fades strokes faster. Both claims are plausible, because shading holds more pigment than fine strokes and strokes blur more readily in oily skin, but no published study has measured either (Grade D). Sun exposure, chemical peels, retinoids, and laser or radiofrequency treatments over the brows all accelerate fading. Ultraviolet light and laser energy, for example, break pigment into smaller particles that the body then clears.
A touch-up session is required in almost every case, because pigment is lost unevenly as the treated skin heals. Dermatology guidance places it at 2 to 3 weeks, whereas most Singapore salons schedule it at 4 to 8 weeks, once the skin has renewed.
Microblading and eyebrow embroidery healing and aftercare
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Brows look darker and sharper than the final result, with mild redness and swelling |
| Days 3 to 10 | Flaking or light scabbing, often itchy, and picking the scabs can pull out pigment |
| Days 10 to 21 | Patchy, lighter brows as the surface heals |
| Weeks 3 to 6 | True colour settles, and the touch-up is booked |
Usual aftercare consists of keeping the brows dry and free of make-up for about a week, avoiding swimming, saunas and facials for two weeks, and applying sunscreen once the skin has healed. Water softens the scabs and carries a risk of infection while the skin is open, and sunlight fades fresh pigment.
Microblading and eyebrow embroidery risks and the evidence behind them
- Common, short-lived problems A complication was reported by 12.1% of 1,352 patients in a Japanese series of eyebrow or eyeliner permanent make-up, most often itching of the brows (8.2%), and infection occurred in 0.2%. Because follow-up was short, late reactions were not captured.
- Granulomas and sarcoidosis, Grade C Pigment can trigger firm red lumps months or years after treatment, when the immune system walls off the pigment particles as foreign material. A review of 21 microblading cases found foreign-body granulomas in 10 and systemic sarcoidosis, affecting the lungs or lymph nodes, in 7. Because a brow reaction can be the first sign of sarcoidosis, a new lump in the brows warrants medical assessment.
- Infection, Grade C An outbreak of Mycobacterium haemophilum affected 12 clients of one freelance artist, 10 of whom required surgery, and the organism was found in the ink. Herpes cold sores can also flare after treatment, because skin injury can reactivate the dormant virus.
- Scarring Experts report scarring particularly after microblading, when the blade cuts too deep, although a systematic review found no published study of pathological scarring on the brows.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans In a survey of 135 people with permanent make-up who underwent MRI, 1.5% reported brief tingling or burning, probably from iron oxide in the pigment reacting to the magnetic field. Because these effects are rare and brief, permanent make-up is not a reason to refuse an MRI.
- Technique vs technique, Grade D No study has compared complication rates between microblading and machine techniques, so no technique can be called safer on current evidence.
Is eyebrow embroidery regulated in Singapore?
- The procedure Beauty services fall outside the Healthcare Services Act, so eyebrow embroidery is performed by beauticians without a licence. The Ministry of Health has described tattooing in Parliament as an invasive procedure but has not introduced licensing.
- The pigment The Health Sciences Authority classifies tattoo ink as a product that is not a cosmetic, so brow pigment falls outside the controls applied to cosmetic products, and no Singapore-specific rules on brow pigment were found. The European Union, by contrast, has restricted hazardous substances in tattoo and permanent make-up inks since 2022.
- Laser removal Class 4 lasers, which are used to remove brow pigment, may only be operated on people by registered doctors.
In the absence of regulation, sterile single-use needles, sealed pigment and a clean treatment room are the main safeguards for the client, because contaminated ink or instruments can transmit infection, as in the Mycobacterium outbreak described above.
Microblading and eyebrow embroidery price in Singapore (2026)
| Technique | First session | Touch-up |
|---|---|---|
| Microblading or hair strokes | S$298 to 1,600 | S$88 to 300, or included within 2 to 3 months |
| Powder, misty or ombré brows | S$168 to 1,900 | S$88 to 300 |
| Combination brows | S$375 to 1,388 | S$88 to 300 |
| Nano or machine hair strokes | S$488 to 900 | Refresh S$600 to 700 within 12 months at one studio |
| First-trial offers | S$150 to 300 | Usually excluded |
Price depends mainly on the grade of the artist, and the same studio may charge twice as much for a master artist as for a resident artist. Some prices exclude goods and services tax (GST), and many quotes do not include the touch-up, which adds S$88 to 300 to the total.
Removing microblading or eyebrow embroidery
- Laser removal, Grade C A review of 11 studies covering 129 patients found picosecond lasers faster and more effective than Q-switched lasers for brow pigment, with less darkening. Iron-oxide, white and flesh-toned pigments can turn darker when lasered, because laser energy converts these pigments to a darker chemical form, and hidden red, orange or green tones can emerge (26% of patients in one series of 76). Most patients require several sessions.
- Chemical and saline removers In one series, caustic removal products left scarring and residual pigment in all 11 patients. Saline removal has not been tested in any published study.
- Price Doctor-performed pico laser removal of brow embroidery starts at about S$218 per session, and salon lightening packages cost S$200 to 550.
Eyebrow transplant and medical options for thin brows are compared on Eyebrow treatment in Singapore, and the causes of thinning are covered on Eyebrow thinning causes.
Microblading or another eyebrow embroidery technique by brow concern
- Sparse brows that need individual hairs drawn in Microblading or nano hair strokes draw each hair as a separate stroke.
- A filled-in, made-up look Powder, misty or ombré brows produce this finish.
- Thin front with a faded tail Combination brows place strokes at the front and shading along the tail.
- Permanent loss from scarred follicles, with real hair wanted An eyebrow transplant restores growing hair, which no pigment technique can do (see Eyebrows).
- History of sarcoidosis, keloids or a tattoo reaction Medical assessment is advisable before any brow tattooing, because pigment and skin injury can trigger granulomas or keloid scarring in these patients.
Frequently asked questions about microblading and eyebrow embroidery
Is eyebrow embroidery the same as microblading?
Eyebrow embroidery is the Singapore umbrella term for semi-permanent brow tattooing, and microblading is one technique within it. Powder, misty, combination and nano brows are the other techniques.
Which lasts longer, microblading or powder brows?
Microblading strokes usually last 12 to 18 months. Salons state that powder brows last up to two years, but no study has compared the two techniques.
Is microblading safe?
Most reactions consist of short-lived itching or redness. Infection, granulomas and sarcoidosis are rare but documented, sometimes appearing years later. Because the service is unregulated in Singapore, outcomes depend heavily on the hygiene standards of the individual salon.
Can I have an MRI scan with eyebrow embroidery?
Permanent make-up is not a reason to avoid an MRI scan, although a small number of people feel brief tingling or warmth in the brows during the scan. The radiographer should be told about the brow tattoo beforehand.
How much does eyebrow embroidery cost in Singapore?
A first session costs S$300 to 1,900 in 2026, depending on the technique and the grade of the artist, and trial offers start from about S$150. Touch-ups cost S$88 to 300 when not included in the price.
