Frown Lines Treatment Singapore

Overview

Botulinum toxin is the lead treatment for frown lines in Singapore, with Grade A evidence, about 20 units to the glabellar complex, S$150-600 per area in 2026, no downtime and a duration of three to four months. Etched static lines are also treated with a small amount of hyaluronic acid filler (S$800-1,200 per syringe, Grade B, with a real risk of vascular occlusion in this area), fractional laser resurfacing (S$450-800 per session, Grade B), skin boosters (S$500-1,000 per session, Grade B) and prescription retinoids at home (Grade A for fine lines).

  • Botulinum toxin for glabellar lines, Grade A, about 20 units, S$150-600 per area, lasts 3-4 months
  • Hyaluronic acid filler for etched lines, Grade B, S$800-1,200 per syringe, vascular-occlusion risk is highest in the glabella
  • Fractional laser resurfacing, Grade B, S$450-800 per session, 1-2 sessions, 3-7 days downtime
  • Skin boosters, Grade B, S$500-1,000 per session, 2-3 sessions
  • Prescription retinoid Grade A for fine lines, sunscreen Grade A for prevention
  • Dynamic lines need toxin alone. Lines that persist when the skin is stretched need a second treatment
Introduction

Frown lines are the most studied wrinkle in aesthetic medicine, and the treatment hierarchy is unusually clear. Botulinum toxin to the glabellar muscles has the strongest evidence of any cosmetic injection, and filler, laser, skin boosters and retinoids are added for lines that have become etched into the skin. This page compares each option available in Singapore with its evidence grade, 2026 price range, sessions, downtime and risks.

Which frown lines treatment works depends on whether the line is dynamic or etched

The line between the brows is created by the corrugator and procerus muscles and, over time, etched into the skin. Botulinum toxin stops the muscles, while filler, laser, skin boosters and retinoids repair the etched groove. The self-check in What causes frown lines separates the two. A line that disappears when the skin is stretched needs toxin alone, and a line that persists needs toxin plus a second treatment. The overview is at Frown lines.

Botox for frown lines, units, price and duration

Botulinum toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Nabota are all approved in Singapore) is injected into five to seven points across the corrugator and procerus muscles. The muscles relax over three to fourteen days, the brows stop pulling together, and the lines fade. Glabellar lines were the first cosmetic indication approved for botulinum toxin, and remain the one with the most trial data.

  • Who it suits. Anyone with dynamic frown lines, and as the base treatment for static lines before anything else is added. It is the lead option because it removes the muscle pull that created the line.
  • Evidence Grade A. Supported by systematic reviews and many controlled trials showing a large and consistent improvement at maximum frown for three to four months, with a safety record over more than twenty years.
  • Dose. About 20 units of Botox or Xeomin is the standard studied dose, with a range of 15-25 for women and 20-40 for men with heavier muscles. Dysport units are not equivalent and the dose is higher.
  • 2026 Singapore price. S$150-600 per area on published clinic price lists, with most mid-range clinics at S$250-350 and the lowest published price about S$250. Per-unit pricing is about S$16-20. Three areas (frown, forehead, crow’s feet) are commonly packaged at S$500-1,200.
  • Sessions. One, repeated every three to four months. After a year of regular treatment the interval often extends and shallow static lines soften.
  • Downtime. None. Small raised bumps settle within half an hour, and a bruise at an injection point is possible.
  • Risks. Drooping of the upper eyelid in a small minority if toxin spreads to the lid-lifting muscle, which lasts two to six weeks, a heavy or lowered brow if the forehead is over-treated at the same time, a raised outer brow (“Spock brow”) if the inner brow is relaxed more than the outer, headache for a day or two, and asymmetry. All are temporary.

Crow’s feet are treated in the same session with the same product. See Crow’s feet treatment Singapore.

Frown lines filler, is Botox or filler better for frown lines?

A small volume of soft hyaluronic acid filler is placed beneath a static groove to lift it level with the surrounding skin. It is used only for a line that persists when the skin is stretched and after botulinum toxin has already relaxed the muscle, usually two weeks later.

  • Who it suits. Deep etched 11 lines or a single central groove that toxin alone has not cleared after two or three cycles.
  • Evidence Grade B. Controlled studies show a measurable improvement in static glabellar lines at three to six months when filler is combined with toxin. Results beyond a year are not well documented.
  • 2026 Singapore price. S$800-1,200 per 1 ml syringe. The glabella usually needs 0.2-0.5 ml, and some clinics offer a half-syringe rate.
  • Sessions. One, lasting six to twelve months.
  • Downtime. One to three days of mild swelling or bruising.
  • Risks. The glabella has the highest rate of vascular occlusion of any facial filler site. The supratrochlear and supraorbital arteries that supply the skin here connect to the ophthalmic artery, so filler injected into or compressing a vessel can cause skin loss or, very rarely, blindness. Experienced injectors use tiny volumes, a cannula or very superficial placement, and keep hyaluronidase available to dissolve the gel. Lumps and a bluish tint through thin skin are the common minor risks.

Laser resurfacing for frown lines

Fractional CO2 or erbium laser creates columns of controlled injury across the glabella, and the healing response rebuilds collagen and smooths the surface. It treats the etched line and the rough, sun-damaged skin around it, but does nothing to the muscle, so it is combined with toxin.

  • Who it suits. Static lines with photodamaged, crepey or pigmented skin between the brows. People who prefer not to have filler in this area.
  • Evidence Grade B. Controlled studies show a measurable reduction in static wrinkle depth at three to six months after fractional resurfacing. Evidence specific to the glabella is less extensive than for the whole face.
  • 2026 Singapore price. S$450-800 per session for a small area, S$800-1,500 for the full face. Pico laser in fractional mode is S$150-450 per session with a milder effect.
  • Sessions. Fractional CO2 one to two sessions, three months apart. Erbium or pico three to five sessions.
  • Downtime. Fractional CO2 three to seven days of redness and swelling, then weeks of pinkness. Pico one to two days.
  • Risks. Post-inflammatory darkening (more common in Asian skin), prolonged redness, and rarely scarring or lightening.

Skin boosters for frown lines

Micro-droplets of lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid or polynucleotide are injected across the glabella to hydrate and thicken the skin. They do not fill the line and do not relax the muscle. They improve the quality of the skin that the line sits in.

  • Who it suits. Fine, dry or crepey skin between the brows, usually as an addition to toxin. People who want a gentler option than laser or filler.
  • Evidence Grade B. Controlled studies show measurable improvement in hydration, elasticity and fine-line scores at three to six months. No study has tested skin boosters alone against toxin for glabellar lines.
  • 2026 Singapore price. S$500-1,000 per session for a small area. A full-face syringe of a hyaluronic acid booster is S$700-1,500 and the glabella can be included.
  • Sessions. Two to three, four weeks apart, then six- to nine-monthly maintenance.
  • Downtime. One to three days of small bumps.
  • Risks. Bruising and short-lived lumps. The vascular risk is lower than with filler because the product is thinner and placed more superficially, but the same care applies in the glabella.

Retinoids and home care for frown lines

Prescription tretinoin or adapalene, applied nightly to the glabella, increases collagen over months and softens fine static lines. Sunscreen and sunglasses reduce the squinting and UV damage that drive the line. Adhesive frown patches worn overnight hold the skin flat and give a temporary smoothing that lasts a few hours.

  • Evidence Grade A for prescription retinoids on fine photoageing lines, supported by several controlled trials. Grade A for daily sunscreen in slowing skin ageing. Grade D for frown patches and “Botox-like” peptide creams, with no published evidence beyond marketing claims.
  • 2026 Singapore price. Tretinoin S$30-80 per tube, retinol products S$30-120, sunscreen S$20-60, frown patches S$20-40 per pack.
  • Sessions. Nightly, indefinitely.
  • Downtime. None, with dryness and peeling in the first month.
  • Risks. Irritation and sun sensitivity. Retinoids are not used in pregnancy.

How to get rid of frown lines, choosing a treatment

  1. Line only on frowning. Botulinum toxin alone, about 20 units, reviewed at two weeks and adjusted.
  2. Line at rest that fades when the skin is stretched (the stretch test is in What causes frown lines). Toxin alone, repeated on schedule for two or three cycles. Most of these lines soften without anything else.
  3. Line at rest that persists when stretched. Toxin first, then at two weeks either a small volume of filler from an injector experienced in the glabella, or fractional laser if the surrounding skin is sun-damaged.
  4. Crepey or dry skin between the brows. Skin boosters or a nightly retinoid are added.
  5. Heavy brows or hooded upper lids. Treated cautiously. Relaxing the glabella alone lifts the inner brow slightly, but adding forehead toxin can drop the brow. Brow position options are at Eyebrow treatment Singapore.
  6. Budget-limited. Toxin every four months plus sunscreen and sunglasses costs less per year than one laser course and addresses the cause.

Crow’s feet and frown lines share the same causes and are commonly treated together at a lower per-area price, see Crow’s feet treatment Singapore.

Frequently asked questions

How many units of Botox are needed for frown lines?
About 20 units of Botox or Xeomin is the standard dose studied in trials, with 15-25 units for most women and 20-40 for men with stronger muscles. Dysport uses a different unit scale and the number is higher.

How much does frown line Botox cost in Singapore?
S$150-600 per area on 2026 clinic price lists, with most mid-range clinics at S$250-350 and the lowest published price about S$250. Per-unit pricing works out at about S$16-20.

Is filler safe for frown lines?
It can be, in small volumes from an experienced injector, but the glabella carries the highest vascular-occlusion risk of any facial filler site. Botulinum toxin is tried first, and filler is reserved for etched lines that remain after the muscle is relaxed.

Can frown lines be treated without injections?
Fractional laser or pico laser improves etched lines and surrounding skin, and a prescription retinoid softens fine lines over months. Neither stops the muscle pulling the brows together, so dynamic lines return with each frown.

Does Botox for frown lines cause a droopy eyelid?
Eyelid droop happens in a small minority when toxin spreads to the muscle that lifts the lid. It appears within two weeks and resolves in two to six weeks. Correct placement, small volumes and staying upright for a few hours afterwards reduce the risk.
