What pico laser is and how it treats dark circles
Picosecond lasers deliver pulses about a thousand times shorter than those of older nanosecond Q-switched lasers. At this pulse length, melanin is fragmented into fine particles mainly by a pressure (photoacoustic) effect, with less heat transferred to the surrounding skin. The particles are then cleared by scavenger cells (macrophages) over the following weeks.
- Wavelengths The wavelengths used are 755 nm (alexandrite), 1064 nm and 532 nm. Shorter wavelengths are absorbed more strongly by melanin, whereas longer wavelengths penetrate deeper into the skin. The 1064 nm wavelength is therefore suited to deeper pigment, and 532 nm to pigment near the surface.
- Toning and fractional settings Low-energy toning passes limit heat in the thin lid skin, which lowers the risk of rebound darkening. A fractional lens array concentrates the energy into microscopic spots in the upper layers of the skin and leaves the skin between them untreated.
- Names on price lists Clinics list the treatment as Pico Eye, pico laser eye rejuvenation or dark eye ring lightening laser, or under a device name such as PicoSure Pro.
- Who may operate it In Singapore, class 4 lasers, which include medical pico lasers, may be operated on people only by registered doctors.
Pico laser suitability for brown, blue and shadow dark circles
| Type of dark circle | What pico laser does | Evidence | Better-supported option if it does not suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown, unchanged on stretching (pigmented) | Fragments melanin in the lid skin | B (pigment lasers) | Sunscreen and a lightening cream first, then laser |
| Grey-brown patches (possible Hori naevus) | Fragments deeper pigment | B (one split-face trial against Q-switch) | Medical assessment to confirm the diagnosis first |
| Blue-purple, darker on stretching (vascular) | No effect on veins | D | Rejuran I or Juvelook to thicken the skin, or allergy control |
| Shadow from a hollow (structural) | No effect | D | Tear trough filler (Grade A for the hollow) |
| Shadow from an eye bag | No effect | D | Eye bag removal |
The type is identified by the stretch and light tests on the dark eye circles causes page. Most dark circles seen in Singapore clinics are of mixed type, so laser is often only one component of a combined plan.
Pico laser results for dark circles in published studies
- EvidenceEvidence for pigment lasers on brown circles, Grade B. Systematic reviews of laser treatment for periorbital pigmentation, including one limited to skin types IV to VI, report mild to moderate benefit drawn largely from small studies. In a before-and-after study of 28 patients, six low-energy 1064 nm Q-switched sessions reduced the melanin index (an instrument reading of skin pigment) by 22% at three months.
- EvidenceEvidence for pico specifically. In one small trial, three 755 nm pico sessions produced significant improvement in 10 patients at 132 days, whereas a single 1064/532 nm session produced no significant change in 19 patients. The two arms differed in both wavelength and session number, and both were funded by the device makers. In a 2024 split-face study of 12 women, 532 nm pico produced improvement detectable on imaging only and caused post-inflammatory darkening more often than lightening.
- Pico vs Q-switch No trial has compared the two lasers under the eyes. A 2025 meta-analysis of 20 randomised trials and one retrospective study (971 patients treated for pigment disorders and tattoos) found similar pigment clearance, with less pain, less post-inflammatory darkening and fewer white spots after pico.
- Recurrence Pigment usually returns without daily sunscreen and maintenance sessions, because the laser removes existing melanin but leaves the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) active.
Pico laser before and after timeline for dark circles
- Same day Toning settings cause mild redness lasting a few hours, without peeling.
- During the course Lightening is gradual across sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart, as the fragmented pigment is cleared over several weeks. In the 755 nm trial, improvement was measured at 132 days, after three sessions.
- After the course The result is sustained by maintenance sessions every few months and daily sunscreen.
Before-and-after photographs on clinic websites show selected cases, and differences in lighting, camera settings and make-up alter the apparent darkness of the under-eye area.
Pico laser for dark circles price in Singapore (2026)
| Treatment | 2026 Singapore price | What the price covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pico laser, one under-eye session | S$250 to 800 | Trial offers from S$80 |
| Course of 4 to 8 sessions | S$1,000 to 6,400 | Packages reduce the price per session |
| Q-switch laser, for comparison | S$180 to 400 a session | No separate under-eye price is published |
Prices are compiled from published Singapore clinic price lists, and some exclude GST. The lowest headline prices are usually first-trial offers, and a reliable quote states the device, the treatment area and the number of sessions.
Pico laser procedure, pain and downtime
- Preparation Make-up is removed, and lubricated metal eye shields are placed over the eyes whenever the lids are treated.
- Treatment Each pulse is felt as a light snap against the skin. Pico treatment was less painful than Q-switch treatment across the randomised trials pooled in the 2025 meta-analysis.
- Downtime Redness lasts a few hours at toning settings.
- Sessions A course comprises 4 to 8 sessions about 4 weeks apart, followed by maintenance every few months. Daily application of SPF 30 to 50 sunscreen to the lower lid forms part of the treatment, because ultraviolet exposure stimulates new pigment production.
Pico laser side effects and eye safety
- Post-inflammatory darkening Darkening is the main risk in Asian skin, because laser-induced inflammation can stimulate reactive pigment cells to produce more melanin. The risk rises with high energy, frequent sessions and sun exposure. In melasma trials, the odds of darkening after 755 nm pico were about seven times those with creams, and darkening has also been reported after 532 nm pico around the eyes.
- White spots Loss of pigment (hypopigmentation) is rare after pico, occurring in 3 of 796 patients (0.4%) in one melasma series treated at low-energy settings. White spots are reported more often after frequent Q-switch toning.
- Eye injury Laser light near the eye can burn the cornea or damage the iris and retina. In a review of 119 reported laser eye injuries, most direct injuries occurred without adequate eye protection, and a corneal burn has been reported during pico treatment of the eyelid. A 2025 expert consensus classes lubricated metal eye shields as mandatory for laser work around the eye.
Pico laser vs Q-switch laser, yellow laser and lightening creams
| Pico laser | Q-switch laser | Yellow laser | Lightening creams | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Targets | Brown pigment | Brown pigment | Blood vessels | Pigment production |
| Evidence, dark circles | B (pigment lasers) | B (pigment lasers) | D | B |
| 2026 Singapore price | S$250 to 800 a session | S$180 to 400 a session | S$180 to 600 a session | S$30 to 150 a tube |
| Main risk | Darkening | Darkening, and white spots after frequent toning | Darkening | Irritation of the lid skin |
Pico and Q-switch lasers carry the same evidence grade for brown circles, and the case for pico rests on less pain, less darkening and fewer white spots in the 2025 meta-analysis rather than on better clearance. The lasers are compared in detail in Q-switch vs Pico laser, Yellow laser vs Pico laser and, for crepey skin, Pico laser vs CO2 laser. Creams are reviewed in Best eye cream for dark circles in Singapore, and every option is compared on Dark eye circles treatment in Singapore.
Frequently asked questions about pico laser for dark circles
Does pico laser work for dark circles?
Pico laser can lighten brown, pigmented dark circles, for which pigment lasers as a group carry Grade B evidence. It has no effect on blue vessels or on a shadow cast by a hollow or eye bag.
How many pico laser sessions are needed for dark circles?
A course usually comprises 4 to 8 sessions about 4 weeks apart, followed by maintenance every few months. Pigment commonly recurs without daily sunscreen.
How much does pico laser for dark circles cost in Singapore?
An under-eye pico session costs S$250 to 800 in Singapore in 2026, with trial offers from S$80. A course of 4 to 8 sessions costs S$1,000 to 6,400.
Can pico laser make dark circles worse?
Pico laser can worsen dark circles in Asian skin through post-inflammatory darkening, particularly at high energy or with frequent sessions. Low-energy settings, less frequent sessions and daily sunscreen reduce the risk.
Is pico laser safe around the eyes?
Pico laser is generally safe around the eyes when lubricated metal eye shields are used and a registered doctor operates the laser. Corneal burns have been reported when the eye was not adequately protected.
